Guide to Dual Fuel Towel Rail

Dual fuel towel rails and radiators can be a great way to keep your towels and home warm throughout the year. This article will cover everything you need to know regarding dual fuel towel rails.

What is a Dual Fuel Towel rail?

Dual fuel towel rails can produce heat by using central heating or electric power. You can heat your radiator with your central heating system in winter, and your towel rail with the electric element in summer.

This makes your heating system more efficient as you don’t have to heat water for the entire central heating system.

Dual fuel elements give you more control over the way you use your towel rail. No matter what your central heating setting is, you will always be able to turn on your towel rail to warm your towels.

You should consult a BTU calculator before buying any radiators or heated towel rails. This will help you determine how many BTU you'll need to heat your bathroom. This is not as important as a bathroom towel rail but it is crucial if you want the room to heat up.

You will need the following to purchase a dual-fuel towel rail:

  • You can choose from a wide selection of dual-fuel heated towel rails.
  • Use the table to find a compatible electric element.
  • If required, purchase a T-piece

Elemental Electricity

Your radiator will heat using mains electricity by incorporating dual fuel elements. If you want your radiator dual fuel, this is what you need.

You will need to know the output of your electrical element in Watts before you can choose the right one for your towel rail. This information is available on all product pages. The table below will help you choose the right element.

This method can also be used to calculate the element you require:

1. Range includes a dual fuel compatible towel rail.

2. Divide the Radiator's Output between Watts into 1.81 and then keep that number.

3. Add the previously calculated number to the closest element wattage by dividing the new radiator's Watts by 1.81.

4. For your radiator, choose a dual fuel heating element.

Not all radiator manufacturers use their own electrical heating elements. While you can use elements from other brands with yours, we recommend that you purchase all parts from the same supplier if possible. You will be able to sleep well at night knowing the parts work together.

Dual Fuel Towel Rail Extras:

Blank Plugs

You can use two t-pieces to block one of the empty outputs. This will maintain a symmetrical appearance.

Extension Pipes and Shrouds

You can add optional extras to complete the appearance of your dual-fuel radiator. Aesthetics are an important aspect of your home.

Installation of a Dual Fuel Towel Rail

A professional is highly recommended to install a dual-fuel towel rail.

There are many regulations when you work with hot and electric water simultaneously. It is best to hire a plumber unless you feel confident.

Switching between Central Heating and Electric Input to a Dual Fuel Towel rail

The input valve (flow), is turned anticlockwise until it stops turning. This activates central heating mode. When the central heating is turned on, this allows hot water to flow into the radiator. (The electric element should be turned off completely.

To activate electric heating, turn the central heating input valve clockwise to stop it from turning. This will prevent hot water from entering the radiator. You can then turn on the electric element to heat the towel rail quickly.

Safety Note: Make sure that the lock shield valve at the radiator's other end is open to allow pressure to escape. This could result in a rupturing heated towel rail or worse.
